Usta Kala Workshop
Design Development Training Workshops in Usta Kala:
Lokayan Sanstha and NID (The National Institute of Design – Ahmedabad) together successfully conducted a series of three Design Development Training Workshops focused on the traditional craft of Usta Kala.
Each workshop ran for 12 to 14 working days and engaged a group of 25 participants. Two of the workshops were held in the field, close to the artisan communities, while one was organized at the NID campus. These workshops provided an enriching platform for artisans and trainers to collaborate, learn, and innovate.
The workshops focused on three key areas:
• Capacity Building: Participants were trained in new skills and techniques, along with the enhancement of their existing craft practices.
• Product Development and Diversification: Emphasis was placed on creating new product lines and exploring diverse applications of Usta kala.
• Training of Trainers (TOT): Selected participants were equipped with the skills to become future trainers, ensuring wider and sustained impact within their communities.
This initiative has not only contributed to the preservation and evolution of Usta Kala but also empowered artisans with tools for long-term growth and innovation.
